Hass

The Reed avocado is a Guatemalan variety known for its smooth, buttery texture and mild, slightly nutty flavor. The fruit is large, round, and green, with thick, easy-to-peel skin. Reed is less tolerant of cold than Mexican or hybrid types. While not ideal for shipping due to its thinner skin compared to Hass, Reed is great for home orchards. Type A.

Mexicola Grande

Mexicola Grande

The Mexicola Grande avocado is a Mexican variety with smooth, creamy texture, and thin, glossy black skin. The fruit is medium-sized and matures very early in the season—often as early as August—making it one of the first avocados to harvest. It is exceptionally cold-hardy, which makes it adaptable to cooler climates, including areas marginal for most other avocado varieties. While its thin skin limits its commercial use, it is an excellent choice for home gardens in regions prone to light frost. Type A.

Zutano

Mexicola Grande

Mexicola Grande

The Zutano avocado is a Mexican-Guatemalan hybrid known for its mild, flavor and lower oil content compared to richer varieties like Hass. Zutano trees are cold-tolerant and vigorous, making them well-suited for cooler or marginal avocado-growing regions, especially where early frost may be a concern. Although not widely favored for flavor, Zutano is valued for its early-season harvest, resilience, and use as a pollinizer for Type A varieties due to its Type B flowering pattern. It is commonly used for cross-pollination purposes. Type B.

Fuerte

The Fuerte avocado is a Mexican-Guatemalan hybrid with smooth, creamy texture and rich, slightly sweet, nutty flavor, which made it the leading commercial avocado in California before the rise of Hass. Fuerte trees are cold-tolerant, making them well-suited to Mediterranean climates and marginal frost-prone areas. While it is less commonly grown commercially today due to its tendency toward alternate bearing and less uniform fruit appearance, Fuerte remains a classic avocado cultivar valued for its flavor, and cold hardiness.
